Chess Is a Test of Your Mental Makeup

It is with good reason that the game of chess has continued in popularity despite the advent of video and computer games. There is something special about sitting across from your opponent with just a chess board between you, that brings out the competitive spirit and draws on every aspect of your thought processes.

You simply cannot fake your way through a game of chess. Simply knowing the possible moves of each chess piece is only the beginning. Some pieces will quickly become your favorites when you take up the game: the rook, or castle, who sticks to his straight and headlong path; the errant knight, the most devious piece, whose moves are surreptitiously made; the bishop, isolated on a single color square, he nonetheless can cover a lot of space in a short period of time.

It’s always seemed curious to me that, in a chess set, the queen has all the power, and the king is just a weak and ineffective figurehead. Nonetheless, he must be protected, and, as in life, that is the function of the pawns and the rest of his minions.

There are a lot of life lessons imparted by the game of chess.

You can manage to just stay alive in the game by taking a defensive tack, but ultimately, in order to win will require you to make at least a few bold moves. You must take risks, and you will experience losses, but the victor is the one who has the bigger picture in mind, and invests his pieces wisely.

I think it’s that ability to keep the bigger picture in mind that sets apart the mediocre player from the savant.

The athletic contest that I think most resembles a chess game is a tennis match, either singles or doubles. When you watch a great player you see that it’s not simply by overpowering his opponent that he achieves victory, but by strategically placing himself and the ball so that he gives his opponent a next to impossible shot.

Just as in chess, the player who learns to box in his opponent, while keeping his own play fluid, will likely come out on top.

Every school child and every household should own at least one chess set. The game is enjoyable even when players of uneven talents are matched up. In these situations it should be the goal of the novice to make a good showing, even if his odds of winning are slim.

A good player will always want to look for worthy opponents to sharpen his own skills. The real glory comes in besting the most skilled player.

Hopefully your chess sets are not just gathering dust, and if they are, get them out soon! You can even visit many of the online games sites and play free chess online.

Baby Shower Games

Baby showers are a great way to celebrate the excitement of the mother-to-be on the imminent arrival of her little bundle of joy. So why not liven up the baby with some great baby shower games? These games are a great way for moms-to-be, godparents, grandparents, and other guests to break the ice and play some fun games together.

Some of the baby shower games that can be played include “Sing It”, “Baby!”, “Measuring up Mommy”, “Here’s Looking at You, Kid!”, “Don’t Say Baby”, “Baby Truth or Dare”,  “”The Seventh Gift,  and “”Dig out the Pins. The list of baby shower games is almost endless!

These games and activities are a great way to let guests mingle and get to know each other, if they aren’t acquainted yet. This is also another great way to honor to the mom-to-be for having that precious baby on the way!

Here is a run-down on how to play these baby shower games while making the baby shower a truly memorable event:

“Sing It, Baby!” - the participants form a circle. They can sit or stand. Then each guest must sing a line or two from a song that has the word “baby” in it. When the first game player has finished, the next person seated on her right has ten seconds to sing another “baby” song. “Baby” songs cannot be repeated, so, participants who repeat a song or cannot think of a “baby” song gets booted out. Last person singing in this game wins a prize!

“Measuring Up Mommy” -  this game, as its name implies, gives guests the freedom to measure mommy’s size. Have a couple of toilet paper rolls ready and ask each participant to estimate the size of mommy’s girth by cutting the toilet paper to the size they guess.

Then each one wraps around the new mommy’s stomach the toilet paper they cut. The nearest length approximating mommy’s stomach girth is the winner.

“Here’s Lookin’ At You, Kid!” - remember how you looked when you were a baby? This game takes you down memory lane as you need to dig up those baby pictures of yours. Because you need them to play this game. Before the party itself, request all the guests bring the cutest baby picture of themselves. Upon their arrival, secure each baby picture and assign a number to each picture.

During the game, lay out all the baby pictures and give each participant paper and pen and ask them to identify as many baby pictures as they can. The guest with the most number of correct guesses is the big winner.

“Don’t Say Baby”
- this baby shower game makes you NOT say what the party you’re attending is all about! The game  is precisely that - don’t say “baby” during the entire length of the game or the diaper pin that was given to you upon your arrival will be taken away from you. The person with the most number of diaper pins collected at the end of the shower party wins a prize.

“Baby Truth or Dare” - this game is for those who love baby trivia. Start by writing down some baby trivia, some correct and others purposely written incorrectly. During the game, randomly ask guests if the baby facts are either true or false. Those who guess correctly get a prize, while those who don’t, will be dared to perform in front of everyone else.

“The Seventh Gift” - we all know that the single lady who catches the bride’s bouquet is designated as the next to get married. Simlarly, legend has it, that the giver of the seventh gift to be unwrapped will be the next expectant mother! Just be sure that you avoid “planting” the seventh gift.

“Dig Out the Pins” - last but not the least,  is the baby shower game that tests the agility of the guests
as they fish out the most number of diaper pins from a large bowl filled with uncooked rice and
diaper pins in under two minutes. The participant that has the most number of pins brings home the prize.

So use you imagination and add some fun baby shower games to your baby shower to get everyone involved and make it a memorable event for all in attendance!

Have a Game Night At Your House

Build family communication and togetherness by having a weekly toy/game/hobby night. It’s very easy
to often let work, school, and the day-to-day business of life rule the day. So much so, that we can easily lose touch with our kids and what’s gong on in their lives. That’s why setting one night each week aside for a toy/game/hobby night can rekindle close family ties.

Those families with small children will probably focus more on the “toy” aspect of the toy/game/hobby night. Take the time to get down on the floor and play with the little ones. Roll playing games such as “house” or “firemen” are lotslots of fun and also a great chance to interact with your children. These activities can also be wonderful opportunities to teach so be sure to take full advantage of them when they arise.

Modeling dough is also a great activity for toy/game/hobby night. Collect some small cookie cutters
and old jar lids (for pans) and create fancy cookies and desserts - inedible and calorie-free, of
course! The kids can turn a large box on it’s side for a counter and place the goodies on display to
sell. Of course, you’ll pretend to buy, eat, and enjoy!

Some fun games for family night include card games like “Uno,” board games like “Candy Land” or “Life”, and
that old favorite dominoes.

When choosing games to play there are several things to consider.

Is Scrabble, for instance, fun for everyone, or does all the spelling and thinking feel like work to some of the players? Does the game take forever to play, so that some players’ attention spans play out? Does the game encourage merciless competition, like Monopoly, leaving losers feeling left out?

It’s important for kids to learn how to lose and still have fun. Don’t “throw” the game, intentionally letting them win all the time, but don’t mercilessly beat them every time either. Make it fun. If losing is a problem for some of the kids, check out some of the newer “cooperative” games where everyone is on the same team.

And don’t forget computer games played either on a gaming console like xBoxxBox or directly on a PC.

Having a toy/game/hobby night every week will help you stay close to your kids as they grow up. It will also keep the lines of communication open with your children so be sure to plan a toy game/hobby/night at your house this week!

An Introduction To Sudoku

Sudoku has gained extreme popularity in recent years. The game has found favor because it can be designed for many different skill levels and comes in so many different formats. You can find easy puzzles, hard puzzles, paper puzzles, or electronic puzzles. Sudoku is one game that will likely never go out of style.

It’s interesting to examine the history of Sudoku and what is now a worldwide phenomenon.

No one is quite sure about its exact origins. The closest puzzles can actually be traced back to some French newspapers from the 1800’s. Even so, they were not exactly like the puzzles we have today.

Experts speculate that it was a man named Howard Garns who developed Sudoku, though it was called “Number Place” at that time. He had his work published by Dell Magazines in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

As we now know, the game ended up with a Japanese name. The idea was transferred to a Japanese newspaper in the early 1980’s and was called Suugi wa dokushin ni kagiru. It was later shortened to “Sudoku”.

It had some relative success, but largely flew under the radar at that time. It wasn’t until the year 2005 when it really took off. British and United States newspapers both began to publish Sudoku games in their editions. Many others soon followed suit.

The reason for its popularity is simple.

It can take a little while to get used to playing Sudoku, but once you understand the rules, you’ll be able to play with no problem. Of course, some of the more advanced puzzles can be quite challenging and take hours If not days to solve.

The puzzle has a total of 81 tiny squares going 9 down and 9 across. There are smaller sections of boxes going 3 down and 3 across. It is your mission to fill these 3X3 areas with the numbers 1-9 with each number appearing at least once and only once in each row or column. That means for example, that the number “8″ couldn’t be in the same row or more than once.

A Sudoku puzzle will be partially filled out when you receive it. You will have to consider what numbers are already there and which ones are left. The easiest puzzles might seem like a breeze to complete, but the more challenging ones could take you days!

The Sudoku phenomenon doesn’t show any signs of slowing down either.

As previously mentioned, Sudoku puzzles can be found in newspapers worldwide. There are even entire magazines devoted to these puzzles.

If you’d rather play electronically, that is an option as well. There are handheld versions as well as versions made to go along with several popular gaming consoles.

Of course, there are even Websites where you can play Sudoku online. Doing a simple Google search turns up sites like WebSudoku.com and Bin-Co.com, which are both great online destinations for playing a game of Sudoku. That means you can have Sudoku with you wherever you go!

Sudoku has a long and fascinating history, spanning different decades and countries and Its popularity shows no sings of waning as more people become addicted to this deceptively simple game!
